Ensure A Good Nights Sleep With This Easy Solution
On a warm summers evening often higher than normal humidity levels will cause a good deal of discomfort and loss of sleep. It is highly recommended that for this problem people choose to use a home dehumidifier. For some people they might think that this is going a bit too far but take a look at the negative effects of long term excess humidity:
Disrupted sleep patterns, allergy problems surface due to an increase in dust mite populations, damage can be caused to wallpaper, wood finishes and painted surfaces i.e. Blistering due to condensation that can form indoors on water pipes, glass windows and sometimes even on walls. Any metals in the house may also rust, irrepairable damage can also be caused to electrical aplliances plus cause much danger not forgetting the likelihood of developing musty smells that can come from the existence of mildew, mould and fungus that may also damage your health.
The humidity level that will be most comfortable is between 40 and 50 percent. Air dehumidifiers can help maintain those levels twenty four hours a day. Selection of an appropriate dehumidifier is never that straight forward. As numerous makes and models exist. Most manufacturers state what size room a dehumidifier is intended for but in reality because humidity levels vary so much between rooms it is not the best gauge of which dehumidifier you should use.
A more suitable question is: “Approximately what amount of water vapour do I need to get out of the air”?”. From this answer you can look at the dehumidifier model/leaflets and find which one removes the most moisture from the air per day, this figure is provided by most manufacturers and is a reasonable guide to go by; although be aware that air temperature and air flow also play a role in the home dehumidifiers abilities. After you have calculated what volume of moisture each day you want to be taken out of the air then you are much better able to find the home dehumidifier that fits your needs.
It is also helpful to identify the source of your high humidity, if it is an ongoing problem such as a leaky roof, bad plumbing and so on which cannot be fixed immediately/if ever then you are going to need a more powerful home dehumidifier. If however the problem is not that severe and just occasional then clearly a smaller home dehumidifier would be more suitable.
Furthermore here are a few features to look out for if you decide to purchase a air dehumidifier:
A continuous drainage feature will mean you don’t have to keep emptying the tank, or at least ensure that there is an auto-switch off mechanism to prevent it from flooding. Purchasing a dehumidifier with a frost sensor is sensible if it shall be used in a basement area prone to freezing and getting one with wheels will allow elderly people to move it around more easily also. Ensuring that your dehumidifer has low levels of noise pre-purchase will be an important thing to make sure of especially if it will be made use of in a living/sleeping area, also having one that includes an air filter may be prefferable for allergy sufferers.
Considering all of the above factors and purchasing an air dehumidifier (ebac dehumidifiers are recommended) should enable you to maintain suitable levels of humidity that won’t interfere with you sleep patterns and ensure you are comfortable at night.

Is Shift Work Sleep Disorder Wrecking Your Life?
Shift work sleep disorder affects around five million people. That’s a lot of people who are going through their day sleep deprived because their job is stopping them from getting the sleep they need. These are people employed in a wide range of industries including manufacturing, transport, nursing, hospitality and emergency services, in fact any profession that requires you to work at night and sleep during the day.
Why does working shifts have such a dramatic effect on our sleep? Those of us who work at night and sleep during the day are working in opposition to their inbuilt circadian rhythm. The circadian rhythm is operated by sunlight and is hard wired into our brains. If we leave work when the sun is rising, a signal is sent to our brain that it’s time to wake up. No matter how many hours we’ve already been awake the melatonin in our brain decreases on seeing bright light and we will feel wide awake. Even those who have worked shifts for many years never totally overcome this disruption to their circadian rhythm.
What are health problems associated with shift work? Sleep deprivation over many months or years can negatively impact our health in several ways. There is the ever present feelings of tiredness and lethargy during the day, not to mention the dangers of driving tired.Worse still, sleep deprivation depresses our immune system leaving us more susceptible to disease.
So what’s a shift worker to do? There are ways of coping with this sleep disorder, but you must be organized and make sleep a priority in your life. The two main enemies of sleeping during the day are noise and light. This is why your bedroom has to be the main focus. Make sure your room is as dark as possible by installing the thickest blinds you can find. It may be necessary to move your bedroom to an isolated part of the house which is removed from the noise of other family members. If this is not possible, ask for the co-operation of your family in keeping quiet and invest in a good set of earplugs.
Don’t let your body wake up! Use a pair of dark sunglasses when driving home from work to block out the sunlight. Limit your caffeine intake during the latter part of your shift to prevent restlessness.
Set a sleep routine and stick to it – even on your days off. Make sure your family and friends know what times of the day you sleep so that they don’t disturb you.
If shift work sleep disorder is affecting your lifestyle despite the above advice, it may be advisable to give up shift work and find another job. After all your health does have to take priority.
