OTC and Herbal Insomnia Medications: Pros and Cons

Many insomnia sufferers believe that natural remedies are best as a cure for their problem. And if natural remedies are not enough to alleviate their disorder, then they may well move on to over-the-counter medications. In each of these cases, what they are really trying to avoid is having to take prescription drugs as an insomnia treatment, since they believe that prescription drugs have harmful side effects and can also lead to addiction or dependence.

We shall look at the different over-the-counter (OTC) medications available, their composition and what side effects, if any, they may have. We shall also look at natural remedies and also examine the advantages and drawbacks of taking them. Insomnia Cures: Natural is Best

Insomnia is such a common problem that most of us suffer it to some extent at some point in our lives. But in most cases we don?t have to worry too much ? we have problems getting to sleep for a few days, but we get back to normal relatively quickly. Some people, however, suffer chronic insomnia, which can affect their lives in an extremely negative way. For these people finding a cure is extremely important, and they have a number of different options to choose from. The first is a natural remedy, which could include yoga, hypnosis, herbal remedies, etc. If this doesn?t work, they may move on to over-the-counter medications. Finally, when all else has failed, they may resort to prescription drugs.

Almost all physicians will recommend trying natural remedies before moving on to prescription drugs. In fact, they will stress that the first step to curing insomnia is to discover exactly what is causing it. The first thing you can do is try to think if the beginning of your insomnia problem perhaps coincided with some change in your life ? perhaps a change in your work, leading to more stress, a change in your timetable, etc. (more…)

Insomnia is an extremely common sleep disorder suffered by a large proportion of the population. The effects of insomnia can be quite serious and can affect the sufferer?s everyday activities in many ways. Therefore it is no surprise that sufferers should be looking for ways to cure their problem or, at the very least, to alleviate its symptoms.

Many sufferers begin by using natural remedies and, if these do not work, may pass on to over-the-counter medications. Finally, if these also fail, they may begin taking prescription drugs under the care of their physician.
