Many people suffer from insomnia - more than we usually imagine. It is a sleeping disorder that can manifest itself in a number of different ways. Some people may not have much problem in actually falling asleep, but after a while wake up and have difficulties getting back to sleep, or wake up a number of times through the night. Others, however, may have problems getting to sleep in the first place but manage to sleep well once they finally manage to doze off.

Types of Insomnia

There are in fact different types of insomnia, with two main types: primary and secondary insomnia. The most common type is secondary insomnia, which can be caused by many different factors. Some of the problems known to cause secondary insomnia are: illnesses, such as heart and lung diseases, pain, anxiety, depression, caffeine, alcohol, tobacco, and sleeping disorders.

It is often possible to cure this particular type of insomnia, or at least to improve it considerably, if you are able to determine and eliminate the cause. This is especially true if the problem can be corrected soon after it starts.

Primary insomnia, on the other hand, is a type of sleeplessness that cannot be attributed to a medical, psychiatric, or environmental cause. It is typically characterized by periods of a month or longer during which the patient has difficulty initiating or maintaining sleep, and suffers sleep disturbance serious enough to cause significant distress or impairment of the social, occupational or other areas of his or her life.

Treatment

It is not possible to recommend the appropriate method of treatment until your insomnia has been properly diagnosed and assessed by your own doctor, as each case is different and thus requires different medical attention.

However, there are some common methods of treatment that are typically used, and which are good for you anyway, irrespective of whether you are suffering from insomnia or not. Most of them are also quite simple. For instance, exercising more is believed to be able to help with insomnia, and the best idea is to get your exercise in during the earlier part of the day, and try to avoid all strenuous activity before bedtime.

Controlling your environment is also very important, as light, noise and even a high room temperature can disrupt your sleep. You should be comfortable while sleeping, so make sure that you are neither too hot nor too cold, and that you are in as much silence and darkness as possible.

Although there are no real prevention methods for this condition, by exercising regularly, eating a healthy and nutritious diet, and otherwise maintaining a healthy lifestyle, you will be able to guard yourself against this and other health problems as much as possible.
